    Hildred Storey Geertz (February 12, 1927 – September 30, 2022) was an American anthropologist who studied Balinese[1] and Javanese kinship[2] practices and Balinese art[3] in Indonesia.

    Between 1960 and 1970, Geertz served as a research scholar,[4] a lecturer,[5] and an assistant professor[2] of social anthropology at the University of Chicago.

    She began teaching in the Anthropology department at Princeton University in 1970, and was named professor emerita in 1998.[6] Geertz was also the first female department chair[7] at Princeton Un
