Before his coaching career, Tikhonov was a defenceman in the Soviet Elite Hockey League from 1949 to 1963, splitting his career between VVS (Team of the Soviet Air Forces) and Dynamo Moscow during that span.
In 296 games, Tikhonov registered 35 goals while winning three gold medals of the Russian National Championship for VVS and one gold medal with Dynamo Moscow.
