Early Life and Education

Pierre Bourdieu was born on August 1, 1930, in the small town of Denguin, France.

His father was a postal clerk and his mother a seamstress. Bourdieu excelled academically and attended the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in Paris, where he studied philosophy.

Academic Career

After graduating, Bourdieu became an assistant professor at the University of Algiers.

It was during his time in Algeria that he developed his theory of social fields. In 1981, he was appointed Professor of Sociology at the Collège de France, where he remained until his death in 2002.
